The White House Groundwater infiltrating the basement of the White House Press Briefing Room was causing serious problems during recent renovations. Majority of the groundwater infiltration was coming in through the original stone foundation of what was once President Thomas Jefferson’s wine cellar and where Franklin D. Roosevelt had his famous fireside chats with the nation. Excavating around the West Wing of the White House was not an option and repeated attempts at an internal coating repair had failed. T. Luckey Sons was contacted to offer possible solutions to the problem. After reviewing the problem T. Luckey Sons, Inc. recommended expanding polyurethane grout be injected through the foundation walls to form a watertight barrier along the backside of the foundation. Injection
holes were drilled completely through the foundation walls, which averaged
up to 5-feet thick in places. Pressure injectors were installed in each
drilled hole and secured. Expanding polyurethane grout was then injected
through the injectors and along the exterior of the foundation walls
forming the waterproof barrier. Injectors were removed and holes patched
with a carbon fiber patch.
